Southsea Brewing Co., Portsmouth

Date visited: July 2016

Southsea Brewing Co. is the latest of Portsmouth's microbreweries. The brewery is located on Southsea seafront, Portsmouth and is housed inside the walls of the historic Southsea Castle constructed by Henry VII in 1544.

The brewery has previously been featured at Portsmouth Beer Festival so I had already sampled some of their beers. The brewery currently offers a small range available as bottles, 2 pint cartons and mini-kegs to takeaway. On offer on our trip was their Casemate IPA (5.4%), Lights Out Black IPA (5.2%) Low Tide Pale Ale (3.8%) and Search Light Smoked Porter (although the porter wasn't on at the time). They have recently also brewed a limited edition beer, the AC-45 English Pale Ale (4.5%), as a tie in with the America's cup event that took place earlier in the month.

After a quick sample I picked up a selection of their bottles, Low Tide, Casemate IPA and Lights Out. I was particularly impressed with the Lights Out Black IPA as I rarely find one that I enjoy. The people at Southsea Brewing Co. are happy to chat about what they are brewing and will offer samples from the tap if you are unsure of what to go for.

Southsea Brewing Co. looks to have some interesting beers coming soon, including a Weissbier that I'm looking forward to trying. I will definitely be back to get takeaway carton for my next lazy day at the beach.

Launched in late July 2016, the brewery is already looking popular. Situated in a prime location, the brewery is perfectly located for picking up drinks for watching the bandstand or for a trip to the beach. Unfortunately it's not possible to drink within the castle at the moment which is a shame (blame the fun police) as it's such a great location.

The brewery is open Saturday's and Sunday's - except for when functions are held at the castle. Check their social media for the latest on opening times and enjoy some beer crafed in a castle!
